I would like to say thank you to the many that came from around Antiquity to help trial the system. Over all the response was good, a few queries about knowing health status, which could be difficult to implement in mouselook. The trial continues but as the day draws on there maybe less Army members around as the European day ends.
Sera Otoro and a friend have developed the system. I didn't think it was common place to wear a meter in a ship but attachment wise it works fine on ships.
Right now it is not common place to wear them becuase spd weapons meters and guns interfers with firing cannons. However if we could get a system that would interfear it would highten our ship to ship melee combat. something that we have tragicaly lost in the past year.
I think testing against the grapeshot cannons is a good idea.
does this mean weapons have to be 'scripted' to work with this system?
do the SPD cannon (grapeshot) , muskets and flintlocks work with this and/or the Honor system? can SPD melee weapons be 'converted'? (do we need to buy new weapons is what I'm alluding to)
I am not sure if you are looking for any further input here from people who would be 'consumers' for this new system since it seems apparent you already think this is awesome and so forth. However I do have somethings to say about this based on my testing experience yesterday.
Good stuff: I like we are no longer 'dead' but incapacitated, I like there will be medikits to revive and possibly continue the roleplay aspect of what happens when the enemy knocks you out, only one meter to wear rather than two.
Bad Stuff: Other than the adjustments listed above this is mot much different than the spd meters, I hate mouselook for swords part of my entertainment value in combat is watching my AV jump around like a ninja, it makes sense to use mouslook for guns since they need to be aimed. Also just find the use of these point and shoot combat systems to enhance roleplay rather limited. More gestures to hog up my F-keys. NOT COMPATIBLE WITH SPD.
I am not a builder, scriptor or ship builder. I have no motive for profit in using these or endorsing one over the other. But I am not happy that I spend thousands of linden on SPD weapons and SPD/TSS ships to have another combat system come in that is not even compatible with these. It seems like a monopoly or that there is a lot of work that everyone has to do to get things up to speed with the new system and I can bet that the makers of of the spd weapons and spd/tss ships have to do more work, not to mention my items are not automatically updated when there are changes like this. It seems to futher increase what I percieve as an already competitive and nearly aggressive competition between developers of similar products when in all fairness to us consumers it should have been a team effort all along. I am not as skilled as the manufacturers at updating things and it takes me more than double the time to update my inventory items because I have no clue what I'm doing and need to have hand holding.
When it comes to combat systems in relation to my roleplaying I think it should be a 'decider' in conflict senarios but it should not be the end. My goal here as a pirate is to rob someone using my ship cannons and in order to do that I need to incapacitate, not sink, the other ship, board, battle the defending crew, win or lose, get the stuff or get arrested, get back to the ship and sail away or end up in jail. This new system and the spd system are pretty much about point and shoot. I said yesterday I wanted something more complex that will allow various senarios to continue after the combat decides who is at a disadvantage in a senario. I should be able to use a combat system to do this seamlessly from the moment I rez my ship out in the ocean. The combat meters on and ready to rock and roll without having to stop my ship, find meters in inventory, don them, remove ship huds, and then work on the boarding party senario.
Maybe that is all in the ground rules of roleplay combat in Antiquity which have yet to be universially defined but I am spoiled by other games I've played. :)
It seems to me that for the benefit of consumers of these systems that sim owners and game masters of Antiquity pool their ideas together to form a development team that can decide over all, with input from the consumers, what is the best system for all sims in Antiquity, and for those of us who like to cross sims lines to play with others something that will work elsewhere as well.
That is my 2 cents and I mean no disrespect to those that have worked long and hard on this. I hope that my comments are taken as they are just suggestions and offering of things from the POV of a consumer resident.
Very nicely said Raine. This is part of the reason I don't mod my ships beyond textures (things are supposed to be equal). I love playing the game - if I win once in a while great - but I sail in battle because it is fun even when I get sunk.
Thank you Oma and Raine for your input. I can see our desires differ a lot, therefore it will be difficult to settle on something. However it's not often we meet in battle so hopefully there is the awnser there.
I think there could be a little confusion in what ACCS is. Your are indeed right when you say it's point and shoot we didn't spec anymore than that, the RP can be generated off the back of that if the players wish. I must point out however this is not a replacement for your SPD ships in anyway, they would stay as is, this your investment is safe, also it is not common place to wear a meter while sailing, after all what would be the point, one musketeer could kill the captain in moments and your ship is dead in the water, I don't think there would be any fun in that. Secondly, fairness as Raine pointed out is a HUGE issue and that's why I got so excited when I saw ACCS, the scripts are secure, ie everybody uses the same script and bullet in a weapon no matter of design in prim. SPD is wide open for anyone to do as they please. This applied to the ships also btw. From the moment Zik Cortes hacked SPD over a year ago it was compromised in fairness. It's true the majority of modification was just to make it work as in it native form it does not, very well anyway;)
As I said you can place the scripts in existing weapons to save you buying new ones and of course the meter and starter weapons are free. The developer pack I mentioned means a set of the scripts and bullets in a pack for you to modify or make new weapons, Sera tells me this would be no more than 100 lindens and of course no modify to prevent getting back into the same mess we are in with SPD. When Zik made PCS a replacement meter using SPD weapons it was rejected out of hand by the POA even though it had all the features you have just asked for, drowning and prisoner taking to mention a few. Perhaps we are stuck with SPD forever?
I know in Antiquity like anywhere else we all want different things but we have to realize if we wish to play together (and we don't have to) we need a common, free and fair system.
Sorry all Qunitus has informed me of a serious bug which I was not aware of.
Open trial closed thanks to all who took part and made quality feedback, it's been a very worthwhile episode to further understand the difference in opinion on the matter of combat.
I take that the bug mentioned means that some of who have not tried the system out will not get the chance. I still have the feeling all this is behind closed doors, nothing has been mentioned to some of the RP groups in Anty. What I find very strange is that someone accused of cheating is now making a weapon system (refer to the other forum)
“Asking for input” Who has been asked?
Ziks system had flaws, as we all know but he was shot down in flames by a small minority, who had power at that time, plus English is not his native tong so many points were missed.
I pulled out of mainstream RP because of all the back bighting whenever anything happened.
One other thing is what do people want?
A skirmish where two armies meet fight and the winner is the one with most combatants standing, and then both sides go and party after.
Or a scripted warfare game that is tactical.
Continues RP that goes on for weeks.
Whatever happens, whatever decision, the problems that occurred when Graves left Anty, must never be repetead.
