May have been an older version of the honor system. It seems to be largely server based now

Well, you obviously didn't read the same thing I did then Marlee.
I was responding to what was written and trying to get this topic back on track about the weapon system and not about whether people are playing or not.
My crime then is responding instead of taking a back seat and saying nothing when innuendo is inferred.
I don't particularly like the innuendo that I was flaming here or inworld. I have never done such a thing.
If I offended, then I apologise. I was merely taking my chance to express my opinion as others are allowed to and so frequently do.
I am also entitled to my opinion.

Eddy - Thank you for filling in the fuzzy parts about Zik's meter! You are dead on about this, and also about the rest of the timeline and evolution of this issue. I'm glad you had a better recall of it than I did so new(er) people can get a sense of the progression, or lack thereof, this past year.

For any weapon system to work fairly it needs to have a HUD for all weapons, otherwise the faster typers will have an unfair advantage.
A point strongly missed is many combatants use swords when fighting, this system is weakest there.
For any system to work fairly it needs to be open sourced (e.g. Linux) and free then no one person has control also makes it hacker proof.
After talking to some Residents of Antiquity, people have the feeling this is all been done in secret, as stated before not all are using the Forums.

Vincento you explained that well :)

I agree, there does need to be a HUD system in place for weapons rather than a chat based system. Gestures are great, but ships need them too, and the more gestures you have, the more complicated the keyboard shortcuts become.

The SPD melee system definitely needs some work, which means the small arms need work as well, since the two are based on the same health meter.

I strongly disagree that any viable combat system should be open sourced. As it is, the level of openness the SPD system has (unencrypted link messages, unencrypted script chat, and open weapon sensor script, for examples) provide a HUGE range of cheating options. In my initial testing for the purpose of working up my own combat system (a project I had considered a couple of years ago, and decided to pick up again after all of the discussion I have seen in Antiquity), I discovered some very serious flaws and exploits. Open sourcing the ship's combat scripts would allow anyone to change their ship's hull and structure ratings. Would you want to go up against a ship with 2000 points of armor? How would you know what any ship's rating would be for sure?

I know I am the new guy around here, and many of you have no idea who I am (yet... lol), but I have enjoyed my experiences in Antiquity thus far. I am very interested in seeing a viable script system introduced that would eliminate the issues everyone is having with SPD, and I am convinced after testing a few other systems that this will only be accomplished with a complete "ground up" development of a new system.

A couple of things which I think are important to the development of a new system:

1) People currently engaging in the Antiquity community should not need to buy a whole new fleet of ships to continue participating.

2) People should not have to replace all of their melee weapons and small arms.

3) The system should be somewhat compatible with SPD (not fully, or it would compromise the whole system and defeat the purpose).

4) A new system absolutely must be better designed to reduce lag. SPD was made with little care of how much lag it causes!

I will start a new thread after lunch describing what I intend to accomplish with my system. My goal is not to make a massive profit from it, but rather to improve the quality and integrity of the combat system and to introduce new features.

Sorry for the long, and possibly rambling reply. ;)

* EDIT *

I just wanted to add a note here...

I do not wish to step on anyone's toes with my own scripting efforts, especially being the new guy. Being a scripter, I know how I would go about developing the system and have a vision for what I would like to see, so the temptation for jumping in and doing it is rather high. :)

If my efforts would be better spent elsewhere, and my offer to develop a system would harm my standing in the eyes of the Antiquity community, I would consider putting my project off. I haven't had the opportunity to test ACCS, at this point either, so please do not take my post here as a critique or criticism of the ACCS system. :)

Ahoy, Mr. Bedlam!
Welcome to Antiquity, and thank you for your offer to assist us in this issue of meters/ scripting. One of the greatest things about our community is the wealth of diverse talents who reside here. New, old, whatever, - makes no difference - you are part of our community, and need not apologize or feel as if you are stepping on toes by offering your own insights and suggestions. We all look forward to your involvement.

Thank you Marlee, I appreciate the kind words. :)

Control over a system is critical, open source is the problem we have with spd, anyone can do as they please with it, this is unfair. However I did say that people will be able to make or modify weapons to work with the system.

I must stress once again ACCS is a beta and this thread was to invite all to try it and feedback. Some have seen it as such others as if it's being imposed, it's not.

I'm sure Sera has been looking at implimenting some of the more possible suggestions, perhaps she could fill us in on the beta so far.

I know we all have different shopping lists, and this makes the task of choosing a system very difficult. When each of us came to Anty SPD was in place and given we chose to stay we all accepted that system by default despite few of us are happy with it. Making the change to something else when everyone has a say is gonna be a tough one. It has been and well persist to be a challenge for us all to find any system we are all happy with. Thus why poor old SPD has lasted so long.

I hope ACCS can be developed to please a few more on the way.

But I ask you all not to judge the system in the very fact I brought this discussion to the forum or the fact I have endorsed it. :)

Thank you all for the continued feedback and thank you to Sera for all her efforts.

All this seems very confusing, as the debate illustrates, despite all the goodwill shown by the initiators of this eagerly awaited.

Everyone has noted that if the SPD system was unique and remarkable for the equipment of sailing warships, it didn’t at all, today for the requirements of combat on land, with the constraints due the lag in SL.

So, before embarking on development of a new meter, even if it is promising, it should be a reflection on what the community expects with this new tool.

This is the only solution to bring the agreement of all components of our little universe. Any other approach will cause a rejection from the factions that have not been involved in the development of the new meter, and this, whatever its qualities. This is human.

We propose, therefore, the creation of a working group to study, select, or elaborate the solution.

This group would be composed of one representative from each faction:

Quintus Beaumont or Eddy Cannonball, for example, for the pirates.
Alonzo Roca or Delacanardire Pera, for example, for the French.
Pamus Bing, for example, for Finlandia.
Drake Moyer, for example, for Citadel.
Etc ...
But, manufacturers of weapons SPD, which we all have and who will, ultimately, develop their products:
Drake Moyer, Pegleg, Kent, Chase Specullas, Sera ... etc

Any disputes will be settled by the highest authority of Antiquity, Gregg Barimore himself or his appointed representative.

First Mission: Define the characteristics expected of the tool:
-Open-source?
-Inability to easily cheat by simple checking by the "referees"
-Hud or no Hud
-etc ...

Second mission: test all the existing meter noting objectively by assigning them a note in front of each of the above criteria weighted according to its importance.

Third mission: If none existing meter match our multi-table criteria, nomination of the group of scripters responsible for improving the tool best suited ACCS or SPD.

Alanxo, a so lovely and unpretentious french corsair ! hahaha !

Alanxo, couldn't you just post this in one thread and point to it from the other? :)
