We have some interesting battle flags, ensigns & sim flags in Antiquity - can we see them and maybe a little yarn about what the inspiration & symbolism is behind the design?

Also, there's some great names of ships - what's the name of yer ship? Whats the story behind the name?

My own build is called the Mother of Pearl (Gaia meaning Mother Earth, Pearl being me ... and another pirate already claimed the Black Pearl)

TSS Shebec ... Gallipoli (not one of Churchill's finest hours http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallipoli_Campaign chosen because it has a Mediterranean feel about its name)

SPD Longship ... Bonny Anne (a play on words because I'm 1/4 Scot, and that was named well before I knew of Pamus' fleet)

SPD Adjong (Chinese junk) ... Taipan (Tai-Pan is Chinese for "supreme leader", and the Taipan snake has the following attributes: its the quickest, most toxic, most intelligent & most nervous reptile of them all.. Tai-Pan is also a pirate game I used to play on a TRS-80 way back.
The merchant version is called the Merchant of Venus.

SPD Corsair ... (maybe a black version coming called the Vegemite) &
SPD Brig ... as yet unnamed, though I usually call out Bonny Anne when ready.

My ensign, shown as my avatar, is the constellation I see at night, the Southern Cross as it appears on the Eureka Flag see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eureka_Stockade - plus the Wicca Triple Goddess (the Triple Moon symbolises all the aspects of female Power united: intuition and psychic insight, creative energy, wisdom and mystery), all on a black vegemite background ;^)

LOL - I was googling "famous pirate flags" > "Images" and found the ensign of someone we know on the third row. I doubt the same results would show for someone living outside Oz, but here's the results I got

Cpt. Hawkers Fleet:

I RAN Bellerophon (SPD Brigg I/II), 8 guns
II RAN Seagull (Selfmade), 8 gun sloop
III RAN Intrepid (TSS Brigg) 10 guns
IV RAN Somerset (TSS Brigg/Trudeau Tradewind) 10 guns
V Red Raven (TSS Brigg/Trudeau Tradewind) 8 Guns
VI Goldfinch (TSS Brigg/Trdeau Tradewind), 10 guns

I RAN Bellerophon

The first HMS Bellerophon of the Royal Navy was a 74-gun third rate ship of the line launched on 6 October 1786 at Frindsbury on the River Medway, near Chatham. She was built at the shipyard of Edward Greaves to the specifications of the Arrogant, designed by Sir Thomas Slade in 1758, the lead ship in what eventually became the 12-ship Arrogant Class. History has it that the First Lord of the Admiralty at the time, John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, had a penchant for Greek and Roman mythology and plucked the name from Lemprière's Classical Dictionary. He directed that the vessel be named for the Greek warrior Bellerophon who rode the winged horse Pegasus and slew the monster Chimera.

She fought at the battle of The Glorious First of June, under the command of Captain William Johnstone Hope, where she lost 4 killed and 27 wounded. In 1798 she fought at the Battle of the Nile under Captain Henry D'Esterre Darby, who was wounded early in the action; she lost 49 killed and 148 wounded. She also fought at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, becoming one of the most famous British ships of the Napoleonic Wars.

From 1815, Bellerophon served as a prison ship at Sheerness. She was renamed Captivity in 1824, sold on 12 January 1836 and broken up.

II RAN Seagull

HMS Seagull was a 16-gun brig-sloop launched in 1795. She foundered in 1804.

III RAN Intrepid

HMS Intrepid was a 64-gun third rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched on 4 December 1770 at Woolwich.

In 1772 the Intrepid sailed to the Dutch East Indies. The ship's master on this journey was John RAN SomersetHunter, later an admiral and the second Governor of New South Wales.
She took part in the Battle of the Chesapeake in 1781.

Intrepid was sold out of the Navy in 1818.

IV RAN Somerset

HMS Somerset was a 70-gun third rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, built at Chatham Dockyard to the draught specified by the 1745 Establishment, and launched on 18 July 1748.[1] She was the third vessel of the Royal Navy to bear the name. Somerset was involved in several notable battles of the Seven Years War and the American Revolutionary War. She was wrecked when she ran aground in a storm in 1778.

V Red Raven

The Red Raven has no historic equivalent.

VI Goldfinch

HMS Goldfinch was an Albacore class wooden screw gunboat launched on 1856-02-02 and broken up 1869.
