Community - The Heart of Antiquity

Scurvy Ragu has been sentenced to 30 days hard labour for crimes including the continued piracy & harassment of the good citizens of Antiquity.

An appeal trial against this sentence is now being conducted (on this forum). We call for any and all citizens to contribute with information about any alleged crimes commited by the notorious pirate Scurvy Ragu.

The jury is the good citizens of Antiquity. We all know who the judge is, and he may or may not comment or act on this trial, as is his perogative.

((OK, we all know Scurvy's sentence will not be repealed, however I've started this thread to discuss what constitutes bannable behaviour - and how to avoid it during pirate/navy RP, and hopefully come to a more equatable system where allegations can be presented to the 'defendant' who has the opportunity to present his side of the story.))

I had wondered myself why a trial could not be role played. But there are a couple of considerations to think of.

1. Is Antiquity a full immersion role play area with distinct lines between IC and OOC (In Character and Out of Character) activity? My sense of this is 'no'.

2. Was Scurvy's activities IC or OOC and if other persons are involved, was this clearly outlined before the activity took place?

In my opinion and past online role play gaming experience, anything that takes place IC has IC consequences and such organization of 'players' to make it interesting, with lawyers, judges, witnesses and juries.

But if the activities are OOC and any intent to start up an IC 'scene' was not clearly stated, then he may just have to suffer the consequences OOC with a banning. So far I have not seen any sort of rules for distinguishing these sorts of activities. Antiquity is what someone else in SL recently described as 'role play light'.

In world trial could be interesting (Gaia had set up a courtroom in a sim she owned last year). I think that part of the reason for setting up a Parliament in Antiquity was to create a set of guidelines to cover things like "bannable" behavior. (I was quite surprised to see a nearly nude person walk though my yard and enter my house and the leave my house without even respond to me hail).

LOL. I wonder what you would have said if they did hail.

Scurvy is a friend and brother pirate. He is also crabby, foul mouthed and ill tempered with a noticeable direspect for authority. (smiles) But thats what makes him such a colorful character in the grand scheme of things.

Scurvy also has always been very helpful to a lot of folks in anty. has always been very generous with both his time, his space, and his products. He was supposed to donate a ship or something to the AYC under sea event.

He watches everyone backs and makes sure no one squats or leaves stuff behind.

But he also skates alot of the rules and has broken many of them and has had management look the other way becuase of his many contributions. Not everyone likes scurvy.

If someone wrong Scurvy he isnt one to go complaining. he believes in defending himself. in doing so he broke an roe rule that was a last straw and led to the 30day ban.

Scurvy has an un authorize SPD cannon with amachinegun script that he only uses on those he feels are griefing him. On this particular day he felt he was being harrased and felt warrented in using what is normaly an illegal weapon. Unfortunatly the other person reported him.

Was Scurvy in the right? Yes. Did he handle it the wrong way? According to established rules... yes. could the banning have been handled better? yeah probably.

But what is done is done. Hopefully when his time is up Scurvy will rejoin our seafaring community in good standing with time served.

Only time and Scurvy can tell.

I have done many things to infuriate many. But im a pirate, why cant i act out my role? Gregg YOU missed a great oppertunity for a fantastic role play scene. Why didnt U imprison me for 30 days hard labor in Antiquity rather then just to ban me without any notice and not to retrieve my belongings. Im sure u treat your dogs better than u treated me. YOUR actions are questionable. You know what Gregg,, ban all pirates and yoyll be happy Pirates arent woosies like u want us to be.

My first meeting with Scurvy was to ban him from Britannica for setting fire to my land. He is now a friend, and as stated does not go winging to management at every opportunity. For that he has my respect.
I have talked to his Grace to try to help Scurvy, Gregg is not against Pirates, but he does have a delicate balancing act to do running Antiquity, He has lost many complaints against Scurvy under his mound of paperwork.
Scurvy calm down, sit back and wait, many of us will welcome you back into Antiquity. Your colourful character is your undoing.
Maybe it should not be Skurvy on trial but the Wingers and finger pointers, who also spoil things for everybody, we are all human and all make mistakes.

I have to agree with Pad on this. We come here to have fun and unwind. Too many want to make this a drama fest.

Personally I have missed having our resident rogue Scurv around and his 4 cannon salute in me broadside (Scurvy's way of saying "hello" to me ) when I'm out for a sail.

He is a Pirate and a Bilge Rat...but he is also me friend and has always been there to offer help and advice....though I strongly recomend ye don't let him change the camera angle of ye ship for ye (~;

Scurvy is indeed a rascal .... and I suspect that he relishes this role.

He is also thoughtful, considerate and extremely generous.

I COULD say that he really is a big teddy bear, but I won't, for fear of embarassing him.

I DO hope that he returns to Antiquity at the end of his sentence. The place seems a little quiet without Scurvy's roguish antics and his unique and vibrant personality.

A few points:

1. We couldnt get a prosecutor to present the charges so a proper trial format to this thread wasnt an option, but we seem to be covering the guts of the issues.

2. I feel there could be a better system of accountability and justice - if ppl have complaints at present they send them to Lindens or the Duke, who either acts or saves them up until there's a pattern of behaviour and then acts with a ban. These bans are without warning or recourse, no questions asked.
Perhaps understandably, people are stunned when they are banned, losing their possessions on Antiquity and excluded from battles and visiting friends and they havent been given any opportunity to examine the charges (complaints) or defend themselves. I can understand the Duke not wanting to get into sorting out personal differences and squabbles, but perhaps a better justice system is something that the new parliament can look at in the near future. It would take a lot of pressure off the Duke.

3. It seems that many people, especially noobs, are unclear about being 'battle ready' and have their cannon showing at all times ... The ROE (Rules of Engagement) state: "Open Cannon ports are an invitation to be engaged with"
Does everyone know that on the SPD ships (except the Adjong which has a merchant version) you can use the commands "/1 cannons on" to show your cannon and "/1 cannons off" to hide your cannon.
If you don't want to be engaged in battle - simply hide your cannon!
Could the powers that be please include these commands in the ROE handed out to the sailors?

4. TY Comm. Jennings for your compliments about my jail & courtroom - I am happy to gift it to Anty for future RP if needed - methinks the scenario would be interesting and a natural progression from the 'hunt & kill' scenarios that go on now.

4. Scurvy's landlord has lost money for the month of the imprisonment (ban) and if Scurvy doesnt come back to Anty after his release, we'll have to find another tennant at the Cay. This imprisonment has a RL financial domino effect which hasnt been considered.

5. Finally, Scurvy is a dirty rotten stinking (role playing) pirate. The 'good citizens' should note that we live in dangerous times (of course that doesnt excuse griefing). Let's hope that we ALL learn something from this imprisonment.

I came here from gor, like a few. I comanded armies of warriors several times. I left that because was enough. I brought but 1 with me. A fine warrior. Scurvy Ragu. He learned swiftly And all was well. He caused a few disturbances but so did I. Angus was kind enough to guide n scold me along the way. Scurvy is my brother and the best "pirate" in all of antiquity. He pushes the limits, but is fair and honest as anyone I know. If you break roe on him he will on you..........seems fair enough. As malibu said hes also a big teddybear n has feelings. He once stopped what we was doing to pass out haloween candy to the kids. I said your jokin right? Said peg its haloween go upstairs feed de kids. He screws up occassionally we all do me prolly more than any. He dont drink 15 beers every day n jump on battle chat n call the navy all pussies if they dun come battle. I think i dun that once n angus made it real clear be last time.......lol. I just wanted to provide a lil background on the man gettin crucified...........i know him better than any......with that said fair winds n be well

Wot I think is that persons of longstanding residences such as Scurvy shod be given more consideration, than a hi ho off ye go. Pirates are pirates and shod not be expected to be de conformists. At least charges shod be knowne and a chance for de rebuttal as welle. Tis not faire playe to single out a man of good heart and helpful to most all he knowe. So wot if a bit o cannon happen to flye by mistake.....The idea o a public trail mite o be a bit of fun let de royal highneses of de navy runne it and maybe we see de pirates come to call......
