A question is posed, whomever gets the first correct answer (and is acknowledged correct by the questioner) get to pose the next question:

Here be the articles, or guidelines if ye will:

1: I will ask a question at the end of this post.
2: Post an answer if ye will.
3: If I confirm that your answer is correct, you post the next question.
4: If an answer is wrong, then the asker should use his or her judgement - give people more time, give a hint, or ask an easier question.
5: Ask reasonable questions. The goal is to have fun, not to stump everyone.
6: If someone gives an answer that is true, then it counts as correct, even if you were thinking of a different answer. For example, if you asks who was the woman who sailed with Calico Jack, and you are thinking of Mary Read, and someone answers Anne Bonny, it counts.
7: Questions do not have to be about history or even pirates, but let's try and keep it within the time frame 1750-1900.
8: If ye don't know an answer, then researching it is okay, even googling.
9: If its your turn to ask, you have three days to post yer question. After that, whoever gets there first can ask the next question.

Mmmmm.. might have to quickly stash my precious bulbs in the secret chest, under the floorboards, in my potting shed.
No one will EVER think to look there....

ok I am going to assume that I am considered correct with my answer.

"Who was known as the Pirate, Pawnee, and Mountain man?" And if you dont mind, please elaborate a bit on each role this extraordinary man played.

I am having trouble concentrating on the question.... my mind is fixated on a certain jar of peanut butter.... filled to the brim with precious bulbs... possibly on it's way to some far away port... to be sold for a small fortune.... or worse, traded for peanuts.

I think I shall rest for a spell on my fainting couch.

Hugh Glass was captured by the buccaneer Jean Lafitte and turned pirate himself until his first chance to escape. Soon he fell prisoner to the Pawnees and lived for four years as one of them before he managed to make his way to St. Louis. Next he joined a group of trappers to open up the fur-rich, Indian-held territory of the Upper Missouri River. Seems that Hugh got into an argument with a grizzly bear and even though he won the wrestling match there were bits of him missing and his leg was broke. His mates pinched his rifle and gear and left him for dead. When he woke, he reset his leg, let maggots eat around the wounds to prevent gangrene, befriended some natives who sewed a bear hide to his back to cover the exposed wounds and managed to crawl and raft his way 320km (200 mile) to the neartest town. After recuperating he tracked down his mates who left him for dead. He was killed in 1833 by the Arikara indians. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Glass

It's lives like Mr Glass' that make me wonder about reincarnation ... how could anyone possibly say "Hugh, you missed something, go back and do it again!"

ahoy, just got back from a cool camping trip to America's oldest city... Bridget, sorry, I dont remember how I knew about Hugh Glass, my head is full of stuff like this, probably because I end up spending hours on the internet going from link to link (gee is that why its called the "web") and then stumbling onto something really interesting like this guy. What a truly incredible life. Thanks for taking the time to summarize him Gaia, I feel like he was justly honored here.
